Andy Ruiz bemoans weight gain following wide points defeat to Anthony Joshua

Andy Ruiz identified his weight gain as a key contributing
factor in his defeat to Anthony Joshua in their rematch.
Joshua produced a career-best performance to
comprehensively outbox Ruiz , a far cry from the firefight
between the two heavyweights six months ago in New York.
Ruiz shockingly weighed in a stone heavier for the rematch
and the beaten champion believes his 20st plus frame
played a big part in the loss.
‘It was his night. I didn’t prepare how I should have, I gained
too much weight,’ Ruiz said after the fight.
I don’t want to give too many excuses, he boxed me around.
If we do the third, best believe I get in the best shape of my
life.
‘[The weight] affected me. I thought I’d feel stronger, thought
I’d feel better. I tried to train myself, but I don’t want to give
no excuses. Anthony Joshua did a hell of a job.’
All three judges saw it as a wide points victory for Joshua
and Metro.co.uk gave Ruiz just two of the 12 rounds.Joshua was defiant in victory, handing off his WBO, WBA
(Super) and IBF titles to his family in the crowd, before
posing with the belts himself.
Neither Joshua or Eddie Hearn would say what the next fight
would be , although the new two-time world champion said
he wanted to settle his rivalry with Ruiz in a trilogy fight.
‘Man the first time was so nice, I had to do it twice,’ Joshua
said.‘A man like me makes no excuses, this is about boxing, I’m
used to knocking guys out. I got caught last time, no
excuses, I gave him the credit.
‘I respect Andy and his trainer so much, I wanted to show the
sweet science of this lovely sport.
‘Stay hungry, stay humble. I’m humble in defeat and will stay
humble in victory.
‘Careers are all about experience, I took my loss and
bounced back, anyone can do it. You want me to retire and
give up?’
