Champions League draw: Liverpool face Atletico, Chelsea meet Bayern & Man City face Real Madrid

Liverpool and Manchester City were both handed testing
draws against Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and Real
Madrid in the Champions League last-16, while Chelsea will
face Bayern Munich.

City lost their only Champions League semi-final appearance
to Zinedine Zidane’s Real back in 2016, which was one of
three straight wins for the Spanish titans.

It’s only the second season Liverpool will be pitted against
Atletico in this competition, having twice drawn with them in
the 2008 group stages, but they did meet in the 2010 Europa
League where former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan
scored a late winner to fire the Spaniards into the final.

Last year’s runners-up Tottenham Hotspur, managed by two-
time competition winner Jose Mourinho, were handed the
best draw among the English sides, facing Red Bull Leipzig
who are making their debut in the knockout stages of the
competition.

Barcelona, who were beaten by defending champions
Liverpool last season, will meet Napoli, while Juventus take
on Ligue 1 side Lyon.

Germany’s Borussia Dortmund will take on France’s Paris
Saint-Germain, while Italian side Atalanta will meet Spain’s
Valencia.

All four English sides progressed through the group stages,
with Manchester City and Liverpool finishing top of their
respective groups, with Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea
progressing as runners-up.

As such, reigning European champions Liverpool and current
Premier League champions Manchester City should, in
theory, have expected an easier path to the quarter-finals,
however, their potential opponents included Real Madrid,
Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

And it proved to be the case that the Premier League’s big
boys were handed tricky ties, with both heading to the
Spanish capital for their first leg tie.

Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Juventus, Leipzig, Paris Saint-
Germain and Valencia also finished as group winners, with
Atalanta, Atletico, Real, Dortmund, Lyon and Napoli joining
Spurs and Chelsea as runners-up.

First leg ties will be played on 18-19 February and 25-26
February, with the second legs taking place on 10-11 March
an 17-18 March.
