Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains decision to pick Luke Shaw for Manchester derby

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists it would have been ‘unfair’ to
select Ashley Young for Saturday’s Manchester derby, after
handing Luke Shaw a rare start.
Young started at left-back during the midweek win over
Tottenham at Old Trafford, but was dropped to the bench for
the visit to the Etihad Stadium, with Solskjaer keen to afford
the 34-year-old a break.
‘Ash is getting on a little bit, I don’t think it would have been
fair to play him with two days of recovery,’ the Manchester
United manager told MUTV.
Shaw, whose first team place was reported to be at risk
following the emergence of teenager Brandon Williams,
makes his first Premier League start since August and will
be tasked with taming fellow England international Raheem
Sterling.
Elsewhere, Anthony Martial returns from injury having missed
the the morale-boosting win over Spurs on Jose Mourinho’s
return to Old Trafford.
‘You want as many good players on the pitch as possible,’
Solskjaer added in reference to Martial’s return.
‘Especially when you play a fantastic team like Man City are.
We know we’ll have to play up to our best to have a chance
of a result.’
Teenager Mason Greenwood is also named among the
substitutes with Daniel James and the in-form Marcus
Rashford joining Martial in attack.
City, meanwhile, will start with John Stones in the centre of
defence alongside Fernandinho with Nicolas Otamendi on the
bench.
Angelino is preferred over Benjamin Mendy at left-back,
while Gabriel Jesus continues up front in place of the injured
Sergio Aguero.
