Tyson Fury finally breaks silence on Anthony Joshua’s win over Andy Ruiz Jr
Tyson Fury has praised Anthony Joshua for regaining his heavyweight
world titles following last week’s comprehensive win over Andy Ruiz
Jr.
The former Olympic champion suffered the first defeat of his
professional career six months ago on his American debut when he
was stunned by the largely unheralded and ungainly Mexican.
Joshua returned to the ring in Saudi Arabia seven days ago and
produced an accomplished and measured performance which saw
him comfortably outpoint Ruiz Jr who, by his own admission, was in
less than ideal condition for the rematch.
Fury had kept his counsel on the fight, with his own eagerly
anticipated rematch against Deontay Wilder likely to be rubber stamped
in the coming days, until now and somewhat surprisingly, was full of
admiration for Joshua.He said:
‘Fair play to AJ, he outboxed a fella who knocked him out
before so that takes a lot of guts.‘He looked fantastic.
I’ve heard all the criticism from the fans but this
game is about winning. It doesn’t matter if it’s by an inch or a mile, by
a knockout or by one point.
‘Winning is winning, nobody wants to lose. I’d rather stink the place
out and win than lose in a very entertaining fight.’
As for Ruiz Jr, who tipped the scales at over 20 stone, Fury added:
‘Well, everyone to their own, I can’t call anyone out on what they do
because I’ve made many‘Maybe he ate too many chocolates or pizzas. Whatever he was eating
he came in a little bit too heavy and he couldn’t get his shots off.’
Promoter Bob Arum, meanwhile, is adamant Fury’s shot at beating
Wilder following their controversial, incident packed first fight which
ended in a draw 12 months ago, will take place on February 22nd in
Las Vegas.
Fury said: ‘Let’s face it, no-one’s really interested in Ruiz and Joshua.
They’re just two other heavyweights on a collision course.
‘The real fight is me and Wilder. This is the biggest heavyweight fight
of my lifetime. Won’t be a bigger one any time soon.’ mistakes and will continue to do so.
