Jose Mourinho takes match ball off Son Heung-min and gives it to Spurs debutant Troy Parrott instead
Jose Mourinho continued his charm offensive as the new
manager of Tottenham by handing teenager Troy Parrott
both his debut and the match ball in Saturday’s 5-0 win over
Burnley.
Spurs gave the perfect response to their disappointing
midweek defeat to Manchester United , with Harry Kane
getting them off to a flyer before Lucas Moura, Son Heung-
min and even Moussa Sissoko got in on the act.
Son stole the show, though, with a wonderful solo goal,
picking up the ball on the edge of his own box before driving
past a horde of claret shirts, evading tackles and slotting
past Nick Pope.
While Mourinho was full of praise for the South Korean –
and felt he was man of the match – he asked Son for the
match ball at the end of the game so he could give it to
Parrott instead.
The 17-year-old striker, who is highly regarded and already
capped by Ireland, came off the bench to make his Premier
League debut, with Mourinho also giving minutes to two
more teenagers – Oliver Skipp and Ryan Sessegnon – on a
great afternoon for Tottenham.
He told BBC Sport afterwards: ‘A perfect day. No injuries, a
clean sheet, goals, perfect football, kids coming on for first
Premier League football.
‘Sean Dyche is always honest band told me after the game
we were too good for them. I thank him for that. They are
difficult to play against but we were too good. It wasn’t them
that were bad.
‘Finally the boys get a day off tomorrow that I’ve not been
able to give them yet.
‘Son’s is a tremendous goal. Harry’s two outside the box
and the pass for the Moussa goal. A couple of better passes
or choices we could have had more.
‘I remember when I was at Barcelona with Mr Robson and
Ronaldo Nazario scored a goal that is similar to Son’s. And
this was an amazing goal. I know that he is going to reach
the face of the keeper and the control he is unstoppable.
The keeper is good, though, but he managed to put it in.’
Son also spoke to the media after his wonderful solo goal
and Mourinho could be heard in the background shouting for
him to be given the man-of-the-match award.
