Jurgen Klopp reveals he turned down chance to sign Sadio Mane while at Borussia Dortmund
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he rejected the chance to
sign Sadio Mane when he was in charge of Borussia
Dortmund but was delighted to be able to correct that
mistake at Liverpool.
The Senegalese forward – who is the club’s top scorer so far
this season – takes on old club Red Bull Salzburg on
Tuesday night in the Champions League with Liverpool
needing to avoid defeat to progress to the knockout stages.
Mane was prolific during his time in Austria, scoring 19 and
23 times in his two full seasons at Salzburg, before earning
a move to the Premier League with Southampton.
But he very nearly moved to the Bundesliga with Dortmund
back in 2014 only for Klopp to veto a deal that cost
Southampton a then club-record £11.8million – a decision
he regrets.
Asked why he initially rejected the chance to sign Mane,
Klopp explained: ‘It was simply a wrong evaluation of my
side.
‘I thought at that time that it was a lot of pressure on
Dortmund and this transfer it had to be right.
‘It is not the only wrong decision I have made, this one I
could correct some years later.’
Mane has nine goals in the Premier League this season, and
two more in the Champions League, and Liverpool skipper
Jordan Henderson has urged him to maintain his hot streak.
‘It’s amazing, Sadio has been outstanding for a long period
of time now,’ he said.
‘He just needs to continue that form. He’s a fantastic person
off the pitch, he dedicates his life to football.’
