UEFA Announce VAR Will Be in Use for Euro 2020 Play-Offs & 2022 World Cup Qualifiers
UEFA have confirmed VAR will be used for the crucial Euro 2020
play-offs in March, and through the European qualification process
for the 2022 World Cup.
VAR hasn't been in place during the Euro 2020 group qualifiers, but
will be implemented for those teams contesting the final four places
in next summer's tournament.
The system has caused huge controversy during its inaugural
season in the Premier League , with the jury still out whether or not it
has improved the accuracy of refereeing decisions and benefitted
the game as a whole.
Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will each
feature in the play-off games next year where VAR will be
implemented.
Scotland host Israel, with the carrot of meeting the old enemy of
England in the group stages, should they win at Hampden Park and
then beat either Serbia or Norway five days later.
As for Northern Ireland, newly appointed Stoke manager Michael
O'Neill has confirmed he will remain in charge during his country's
play-off matches.
Should the green and white army come through a tricky away trip to
Bosnia and Herzegovina, then they may well be taking on their
neighbours from the Emerald Isle.
Mick McCarthy's men travel to Slovakia, with the winner in line to
play the victor in Bosnia for a position at Europe's top table.
In the final encounter, Georgia entertain Belarus, whilst Kosovo travel
to North Macedonia, and the winners of which will face each other in
the final.
The four semi-finals will all be played on Thursday 26, March, whilst
those triumphant teams will then contest the play-off finals on the
following Tuesday.
The VAR system has graced the international stage before, and was
first trialled at the 2017 Confederations Cup before being used at the
World Cup in Russia the following year.
As mentioned, it is also set to be introduced for the 2022 World Cup
qualifying campaign, as teams start their journey to the tournament
in Qatar.
